Chitosan is used as a biostimulant, seed treatment, foliar spray and post-harvest treatment. We have a range of products for agricultural use. The most important are the High and Low Molecular Weight products, available in fungal and marine versions, each with different target applications.

How chitosan helps
when water is scarce

Drought stresses plants in three ways. Independent studies show chitosan helps with all three — without replacing irrigation.

Holds water longer

Signals the plant to partly close its leaf pores sooner, so less water evaporates during a dry spell.

Protects plant cells

Boosts the plant's own antioxidant enzymes, mopping up the reactive oxygen that builds up under drought.

Keeps photosynthesis going

Treated plants hold more chlorophyll and keep producing energy for longer — one reason yields are often better protected.

Chitosan is not a substitute for irrigation, and results vary by crop, dose and method. Across the studies, treated plants came through dry spells in better condition — and in several field trials that meant a measurable yield or water-use advantage.

For more information please contact our agricultural experts.

Test Chitosan on
Your Own Crops

Every crop, climate, and growing system responds differently. Our Category 2 programme — Field Trials & Biostimulant Methods — supports agricultural businesses in setting up field trials and developing application methods with an independent expert, tailored to local conditions and specific crops.

Why Chitosan Works in Trees

Mechanisms in Woody Perennials

The multi-year crop cycle, high individual tree value, and limited fungicide options in certified forestry make chitosan's biological activity uniquely valuable.

🛡️

Systemic Resistance (SAR/ISR)

Activates the phenylpropanoid pathway in woody perennials, producing lignin precursors, phytoalexins, and PR-proteins. Primes ISR against canker-forming fungi, root pathogens, and foliar diseases before attack.

🌱

Root Architecture Promotion

Published trials report 20–40% improvement in root-to-shoot ratio in eucalyptus and pine seedlings (Pichyangkura & Chadchawan, 2015; Sharif et al., 2018). Lateral root density and root hair development directly improve post-transplant survival rates in reforestation programmes.

🦠

Nursery Damping-Off Suppression

Disrupts cell membranes of Pythium, Fusarium, and Rhizoctonia. Stimulates seedling's own defence system. Published nursery trials report 40–70% reduction in damping-off incidence across multiple tree species (Benhamou et al., 1994; Ghaouth et al., 1992; El Hadrami et al., 2010).

💧

Transplant Stress Tolerance

Applied 1–2 weeks before lifting, activates osmotic adjustment (proline accumulation, ABA signalling). Reduces transplant shock and improves first-season survival — critical in tropical reforestation.

🍄

Mycorrhizal Enhancement

High MW grades enhance ectomycorrhizal colonisation in pine and AMF infection rates in eucalyptus and teak. Particularly important when mycorrhizal inoculants are used in nursery programmes.

📈

Growth Rate (MAI) Improvement

Multiple plantation-scale biostimulant trial programmes report 8–18% increases in mean annual increment (MAI) in eucalyptus and poplar systems. Enhanced nitrogen use efficiency and phosphorus uptake are the primary mechanisms — especially relevant on nutrient-poor degraded reforestation soils.

Cosmetics & Personal Care

Chitosan for
Beauty & Personal Care

High-purity fungal chitosan as a multifunctional active ingredient for hair care, skin care, and personal care formulations. Vegan, allergen-free, food-supply-chain origin.

Fungal-origin chitosan in personal care — film-forming, moisturising, and vegan-compatible active ingredient.

A Natural Multifunctional
Biopolymer

Chitosan is a naturally derived biopolymer with a unique combination of film-forming, moisturising, anti-microbial, and conditioning properties that make it valuable across a wide range of personal care applications.

Hair Conditioning & Repair

Chitosan deposits a fine, flexible film on damaged hair cuticles, improving combability, reducing static, and restoring shine. Used in shampoos, conditioners, leave-in treatments, and hair masks. Positively charged at acidic pH — excellent substantivity to negatively charged hair surfaces.

Skin Moisturisation

Low molecular weight chitosan acts as a humectant, helping to bind and retain water in the stratum corneum. Forms a breathable, protective film that reduces transepidermal water loss (TEWL) without occluding the skin. Suitable for face creams, serums, and body lotions.

Anti-Microbial Protection

Chitosan exhibits broad-spectrum anti-microbial activity against bacteria and fungi — particularly effective against Staphylococcus aureus and Candida albicans. Used as a preservative booster in formulations, reducing the need for synthetic preservatives. Also effective in anti-dandruff shampoos targeting Malassezia.

Film-Forming & Fixative

Chitosan forms flexible, water-resistant films on skin and hair. Used as a natural fixative in styling gels and hairsprays, providing hold without stiffness. Also used in nail care for strengthening and protective topcoats, where its bioadhesive properties improve wear and adhesion.

Anti-Ageing & Skin Conditioning

Chitosan supports skin barrier conditioning and a smoother, firmer skin appearance — relevant for anti-ageing formulations. Studies show enhanced fibroblast activity and collagen synthesis. Ultra-low MW chitosan oligosaccharides show particular promise for penetration and bioactivity in premium serum formulations.

Vegan & Clean Label

Our fungal chitosan is 100% vegan — derived from mushroom material rather than crustacean shells. No allergen labelling required. Suitable for vegan-certified, organic-positioned, and clean beauty formulations where crustacean-derived chitosan cannot be used.

Coatings

Chitosan for
Functional Coatings

A bio-based, film-forming polymer for protective, antimicrobial, and barrier coatings. Chitosan performs as a standalone coating and as a functional additive that upgrades existing coating systems — across packaging, textiles, agriculture, construction, marine, and paper.

One Polymer,
Multiple Coating Functions

Chitosan combines film formation, a permanent positive charge, and reactive amino groups in a single renewable molecule. That combination lets one raw material deliver adhesion, antimicrobial protection, and barrier performance that would otherwise require several synthetic additives.

Continuous, Flexible Film

Chitosan forms transparent, cohesive films from aqueous solution without plasticiser-heavy systems. Films remain flexible on paper, textile, metal, glass, and polymer substrates, and thickness is controlled through molecular weight and solids content.

Intrinsic Antimicrobial Activity

The protonated amino groups disrupt negatively charged microbial cell walls, giving broad-spectrum activity against bacteria, moulds, and yeasts. The activity is built into the film itself, so no migrating biocide is required.

Oxygen & Grease Barrier

Dense hydrogen bonding produces low oxygen and oil permeability at dry conditions — the basis for replacing plastic and fluorochemical barrier layers in paper and board packaging.

Adhesion to Difficult Substrates

The cationic backbone binds strongly to negatively charged surfaces such as cellulose, wool, cotton, glass, and oxidised metal. Chitosan is therefore widely used as a primer or anchoring layer under other coating chemistries.

Chemically Modifiable

Free amino and hydroxyl groups allow crosslinking, quaternisation, grafting, and metal-ion complexation. Formulators can tune water resistance, charge density, and durability without changing the base raw material.

Bio-Based & Non-Toxic

Our fungal chitosan is renewable, biodegradable, and free of crustacean allergens. It supports formulations moving away from PFAS, formaldehyde-releasing biocides, and petrochemical binders, and is compatible with food-contact and skin-contact positioning.

Where Chitosan Coatings
Create Value

Chitosan coatings are applied across sectors that need protection, hygiene, or barrier performance from a renewable source. The following industries are the most established starting points.

📦

Food Packaging & Paper

Grease and oxygen barrier coatings for paper, board, and moulded fibre as a replacement for PE lamination and PFAS treatments. Antimicrobial activity extends shelf life, and coated fibre stays repulpable and recyclable.

🍎

Fresh Produce & Post-Harvest

Edible coatings applied directly to fruit and vegetables slow respiration and moisture loss while suppressing Botrytis and Penicillium. A practical route to reduced post-harvest losses and lower fungicide residues.

🧵

Textiles & Technical Fabrics

Durable antimicrobial and odour-control finishes for sportswear, workwear, and home textiles. Chitosan also improves dye uptake and fixation, cutting dye and salt consumption in the dye bath.

🌱

Seed & Agricultural Coatings

Seed treatment films that protect against soil-borne pathogens while triggering the plant's own defence response. Also used as a binder in controlled-release fertilizer coatings and in film-forming foliar products.

🏗️

Construction & Wood Protection

Mould- and fungal-resistant coatings for timber, plaster, and interior paints. Chitosan acts as a bio-based preservative and rheology aid in low-VOC systems and complements mineral binders.

Marine & Anti-Fouling

Non-biocidal fouling-release layers for hulls, aquaculture nets, and submerged structures. Chitosan-based films reduce biofilm settlement without releasing copper or organotin into the water column.

⚙️

Metal & Corrosion Protection

Conversion-layer alternatives for steel, aluminium, and magnesium alloys. Chitosan chelates metal ions and forms an adherent film, functioning as a chromate-free primer or corrosion-inhibitor carrier.

🔋

Electronics & Specialty Films

Bio-based binders and separator coatings, humidity-sensing layers, and functional membranes. Chitosan offers a water-processable alternative to solvent-borne polymers in thin-film applications.

Standalone Coating
or Part of Your System

Chitosan is effective on its own, but most commercial results come from combining it with the binders, actives, and fillers already in a formulation. Both routes are supported.

Approach 1

Chitosan as a Standalone Coating

A simple aqueous chitosan solution, applied by dipping, spraying, or roll coating, already delivers a functional film. This is the fastest route to a clean-label, single-ingredient coating.

One renewable ingredient replaces binder, biocide, and barrier additive
Water-based processing — no solvent recovery or dedicated equipment
Short ingredient list supports food-contact and clean-label claims
Best suited to dry or short-life applications where water resistance is not critical
Approach 2

Chitosan Combined with Other Solutions

Used as a co-binder, primer, or functional additive, chitosan raises the performance of existing systems while allowing a reduction in synthetic components.

Blends with starch, cellulose derivatives, PVA, alginate, and waterborne acrylics
Crosslinking with citric acid, genipin, or tannins raises water and abrasion resistance
Carries and stabilises essential oils, silver, zinc, and corrosion inhibitors for controlled release
Pairs with hydroxyapatite, nanocellulose, and clays for hardness and barrier improvement
Works as a primer layer that improves adhesion of the topcoat you already use

Develop Your
Chitosan Coating

Every substrate, process line, and performance target is different. Our Category 1 programme — Product Development & Formulation — supports coatings companies in adapting an existing product or jointly developing a new chitosan-based coating for their market.

Nutraceuticals

Chitosan for
Nutraceutical Applications

Food-grade and human consumption grade chitosan as a dietary supplement active — cholesterol management, weight management, immune modulation, and gut health. Vegan, allergen-free, Halal-compatible.

Clinically Studied
Health Applications

Chitosan has been the subject of numerous clinical studies examining its role in metabolic health, weight management, and immune function. Our Human Consumption Grade meets the purity requirements for use as a dietary supplement active.

Cholesterol Management

Chitosan's cationic character enables it to bind bile acids and dietary fats in the intestine, reducing fat absorption. Multiple clinical studies report reductions in total and LDL cholesterol with regular supplementation. The EFSA has evaluated chitosan for a health claim related to maintenance of normal blood LDL cholesterol concentration.

Weight Management Support

By binding dietary fats and reducing their absorption in the small intestine, chitosan may support calorie reduction as part of a weight management programme. It acts as a dietary fat binder, forming a gel-like complex with ingested fats that is excreted rather than absorbed. Evaluated in several randomised controlled trials.

Immune Modulation

Chitosan and chitosan oligosaccharides (COS) demonstrate immunomodulatory activity — stimulating macrophage activation, natural killer cell function, and cytokine production. Research suggests COS may enhance innate immune responses, making them of interest in immune-support supplements and functional foods.

Gut Health & Prebiotic Activity

Chitosan oligosaccharides function as prebiotics — selectively promoting the growth of beneficial bacteria including Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium while inhibiting pathogens. Short-chain fatty acids produced during fermentation of COS contribute to colonic health and the gut-immune axis. Of interest in functional foods and probiotic-adjunct supplements.

Anti-Diabetic Potential

COS have been studied for their ability to inhibit α-glucosidase and α-amylase — key enzymes in carbohydrate digestion — potentially slowing post-prandial glucose rises. Animal and in vitro studies report improved insulin sensitivity and reduced fasting blood glucose. Of growing interest in functional food and supplement formulations targeting metabolic health.

Antioxidant Activity

Chitosan oligosaccharides exhibit free radical scavenging activity — neutralising reactive oxygen species (ROS) and reducing oxidative stress. This antioxidant effect is of interest for anti-ageing, sports recovery, and general wellness supplement applications. Higher degree of deacetylation correlates with stronger antioxidant activity.

Our Nutraceutical Grade
Human Consumption Grade — Chitosan HCl
Chitosan needs a mildly acidic environment to dissolve fully. Vegan, allergen-free, Halal-compatible. Produced under WHO-GMP with full analytical documentation per food safety standards.
Chitosan Oligosaccharides (COS)
Ultra-low MW grade — highly bioavailable. Preferred for gut health, immune, and anti-diabetic supplement applications.

Our fungal origin chitosan carries no crustacean allergen declaration requirement — enabling use in vegan and allergen-free supplement formulations where marine chitosan cannot be used.

Research & Development

Chitosan R&D:
Science & Sustainability

Research into chitosan and chitin applications is one of the most active areas of biomaterials science. Pure Biomaterials engages with the global scientific community to translate research advances into commercial reality.

Key Research Areas
in Chitosan Science

Over 30,000 scientific publications reference chitosan applications. Below are the key research themes driving commercial development of chitosan and fungal-derived biopolymers.

Nanoparticle & Nano-Encapsulation Research

Chitosan nanoparticles (50–300 nm) are the subject of intensive research for drug, gene, vaccine, and agrochemical delivery. Self-assembling chitosan-tripolyphosphate nanoparticles are the most studied system. Research focuses on controlled release kinetics, surface functionalisation, and scale-up manufacturing.

Modified & Functionalised Chitosan

Chemical modification of chitosan — carboxymethylation, quaternisation, PEGylation, thiolation — expands its functional properties. Quaternary ammonium chitosan is permanently cationic at all pH levels. Thiolated chitosan (thiomers) have exceptional mucoadhesion. These derivatives are active research targets for pharmaceutical and advanced material applications.

Biostimulant Mode of Action Research

Peer-reviewed research continues to elucidate chitosan's mechanisms in plants — PRR receptor binding, DAMP signalling, salicylic acid and jasmonic acid pathway activation, and epigenetic priming. Understanding the relationship between molecular weight, degree of deacetylation, and bioactivity is a key research frontier driving precision agriculture applications.

Biodegradable Packaging & Films

Chitosan films and composites are among the most researched bioplastic materials — with excellent oxygen barrier properties, anti-microbial activity, and full biodegradability. Research focuses on improving mechanical strength, water resistance, and processability for food packaging, agricultural mulch films, and active packaging with controlled release of antimicrobials or antioxidants.

Water Treatment & Environmental Applications

Chitosan is a highly effective natural flocculant and heavy metal chelator. Research explores chitosan-based adsorbents for removal of heavy metals (Pb, Cu, Cd, Cr), dyes, pharmaceuticals, and microplastics from wastewater. Chitosan beads and composites with graphene oxide, zeolites, or magnetic nanoparticles are an active research area for sustainable water purification.

Fungal Chitosan:
A Sustainable Resource

Unlike marine chitosan — which depends on crustacean fishery by-products with variable supply chains and seasonal availability — fungal chitosan is derived from controlled mycelial fermentation or food-industry mushroom residues. This confers fundamental sustainability advantages:

Circular economy integration — fungal chitin recovered from food-industry mushroom processing waste, adding value to an existing supply chain rather than creating new extractive pressure
No crustacean allergen — eliminates allergen declaration requirements and opens vegan and organic markets closed to marine chitosan
Consistent composition — controlled production environment yields reproducible molecular weight, degree of deacetylation, and purity versus seasonal variability in marine sources
Research growth — publications on fungal chitosan have grown >300% in the past decade, driven by the sustainability imperative and expansion of applications in personal care, food, and agriculture
